- "Narim, this is a free country. Every year we take in thousands of refugees fleeing repression. If you request asylum, you can stay here no matter what Omoc wants."
- ―Captain Sam Carter[src]
Asylum is the situation in-which a person flees persecution from their authority and seeks the sanctuary of another authority. Both the Tau'ri and the Goa'uld utilize the right and concept of asylum. Sanctuary in the Goa'uld language is Cal Mah. (SG1: "Enigma", "Serpent's Song", "The Warrior")
History
When a group of Tollan survivors were brought to Earth in 1998, Captain Sam Carter informed Narim that he could request asylum and stay. (SG1: "Enigma")
Several goa'uld have asked the Tau'ri for sanctuary:
- Apophis demanded Cal Mah after he fled from Sokar and was near death. He did this in the belief that the Tau'ri would also die with him. (SG1: "Serpent's Song")
- Camulus asked Dr. Elizabeth Weir for asylum after his fleet was decimated and his domain fell. As shame and torture was all that awaited him, he offered to instead be of use to the Tau'ri. In retaliation, Amaterasu said he would forever be branded a traitor and a coward. (SG1: "New Order, Part 2")
- Amun asked SG-1 for asylum after Sekhmet attacked him and he and Sam Carter escaped his Ha'tak and the tunnels of P3X-314 together. (SG1: "Unleashed Ep 2")
- Zirstyr asked for asylum so that Phoenix Site could aid her in taking down Wepwawet. Her request was granted. (RPG: "Where Giants Tread", "Ave Maria", "Perfidy")
