INT—PENTAGON STONE LAB

[Telford rests or meditates in a chair. Mehta and Maloney enter.]

MEHTA
  Hey. Your shift's over.

TELFORD
  I'm good.

MEHTA
  You need rest.

TELFORD
I've been sitting on my ass for hours.

MEHTA
  General O'Neill's orders.

[Telford sees Airman Maloney standing by. He takes off his stone and turns off the device.]

INT—LOCKER ROOM

[Telford changes into civilian clothes. Once alone, he dials his cell phone.]

TELFORD

(into phone)

Got plans for tonight?

INT—YOUNG HOME

[Telford and Emily sit across from each other, enjoying dinner.]

TELFORD
Mmm, this is delicious. My compliments to the chef.

EMILY

(chuckling)

I'll give you his number, and he delivers.

[They both laugh.]

TELFORD
  No kidding?

EMILY
Listen, I wanted to say thank you. There aren't many people that understand what I'm going through.

TELFORD

(distracted)

Happy to help. Any time.

EMILY
  Is everything okay?

TELFORD
We've only known each other a short time. But I'd like to feel I can call you a friend.

EMILY

(concerned)

Yeah, of course you can.

TELFORD
And as such, I feel a certain…obligation to tell you some things…about your husband.

OPENING CREDIT

INT—CORRIDORS

[Scott leads several of the crew jogging around the ship. He pauses by the kino room, where he spots Eli, and stops. Some run past Scott, but most jog around this nexus in the corridors.]

SCOTT
Hey! You were supposed to join us?

ELI
Yeah, I know. Sorry. I-I pulled a thing?

SCOTT
Yeah, uh, Col. Young wants everybody in shape.

ELI
  Tomorrow, tomorrow! Yeah. I promise!

SCOTT

(calling to others)

Okay, let's go. Come on.

[Scott and the others jog on. Volker has remained, sitting, exhausted on the bench outside.]

VOLKER
  Aw, to hell with this.

[He heads off in the other direction, away from Scott and the others.]

INT—MESS HALL

[Rivers spots Park entering, and he greets her with a wide smile.]

RIVERS
  Hey.

PARK

(cold politeness)

Hello.

[Rivers watches her pass, puzzled and hurt by her brush-off. TJ brings her bowl to a table occupied by Spencer.]

TJ
  Mind if I join you?

[Spencer does not respond, so she sits down across from him.]

TJ
  You okay?

SPENCER
  I'm fine.

TJ
'Cause you look a little tired. You getting any sleep?

SPENCER
  I said I'm fine.

[He gets up and leaves.]

TJ

(to herself)

I'm fine, too. Thanks for asking.

INT—KINO ROOM

[Eli struggles to keep his eyes open while watching kino footage.]

[The following conversation switches from Rush in the control room and Eli in the kino room.]

RUSH
  Eli?

ELI

(yawning)

Yo.

RUSH
We've managed to secure two more sections of the ship. I'm sending a team in to take a look. I need you to operate the kino for me.

ELI

(annoyed)

I'm kinda busy here.

RUSH
  Doing what?

[Eli considers how to answer this.]

ELI

(awkwardly)

I can't…say.

RUSH
And what's that supposed to mean?

ELI
That I was told not to say.

RUSH
Oh, a secret mission, is it? How intriguing.

ELI
Look, you're going to have to talk to Col. Young…about this.

[He winces at how much he's revealing.]

RUSH
Eli, do me a favor, have a look at your chest. Is there any insignia there? Anything that says "lieutenant" or "sergeant"? Or anything like that?

ELI

(rolling his eyes)

All I got is "you are here".

RUSH
  Exactly.

ELI
I'll be down when I'm done.

RUSH
No, no, don't bother. I'll manage.

INT—CORRIDOR

[Young and TJ head down a corridor.]

TJ
He says he's fine, but I'm worried about him.

YOUNG
Him and about a dozen others. Listen, I want you to do psych evaluations. Everyone, civilians, military. I've been meaning to ask you to do it anyway.

TJ
Don't you think Camile might want to do it? Being H.R….

YOUNG
Well, you took psych in college, right?

TJ
One course, undergrad. That hardly qualifies me.

YOUNG
  That's perfect. Get to it.

[He parts ways with her, leaving her looking helpless in the corridor.]

INT—CORRIDOR, NEW SECTION

[Greer, Brody, and Marsden warily explore a corridor. Rush watches their progress from the control room via a kino.]

[The conversation switches between Rush in the control room and the exploring patrol.]

RUSH
Hold on. The door to your right. Try it.

[They open a large door and cautiously enter another bedroom.]

GREER
  More quarters…not bad.

RUSH
  Moving on…

INT—LOUNGE

[Franklin sits on a couch across from TJ.]

FRANKLIN
So, do I start crying now, or do we build up to that?

TJ
Why don't you just tell me how you're doing?

FRANKLIN
  How I'm doing?!

TJ
  With life on the ship?

FRANKLIN

(smiling falsely)

Well…it sucks! I hate it!

TJ
Okay, how about your hydroponics lab? Any luck there?

FRANKLIN
Seeds won't sprout. Which really sucks because I would have liked to have started to grow some food. I'm not really much of a fruits and vegetable guy, but anything would be better than the crap that you've been serving us. And there's not enough water. And the beds are rock hard. And, uh, don't let me forget to mention that I was shot by one of your people!

TJ

(tightly)

So, you're doing fine, then.

INT—KINO ROOM

[Eli's eyes are blurring looking at the experimental data. Young arrives.]

YOUNG
  Eli? How's it going?

ELI
I've run simulations on a dozen variations of Telford's plan to power the 'gate, but so far…problems.

YOUNG
  Such as?

ELI
Catastrophic failure. Every time. Horrible death. Fire and brimstone. "Dogs and cats living together…"

YOUNG
I get it. Keep at it. I want to make sure.

[He spots Scott walking past out in the corridor.]

YOUNG
Lieutenant, you're next up to use the stones to visit Earth.

SCOTT
Uh, it's all right, sir, I can wait.

YOUNG
You've been waiting. Take your turn. Wray will be going, too.

SCOTT
  All right. Thanks.

INT—CORRIDOR, NEW SECTION

[The conversation switches between Rush in the control room and the exploring patrol.]

RUSH
  Go ahead.

[They open the door to a chamber with a chair set in the center.]

BRODY
  What the hell is this?

[Brody heads to the consoles.]

GREER
Hey, looks like we found the dentist's office.

[Rush watches the kino footage as Brody studies the console.]

[Something activates and the chair suddenly has straps come down on the footrest and armrests and a bar comes out at each side of the headrest with bolt-like objects facing towards where a person's head would be.]

GREER
  Whoa.

RUSH

(fiercely)

Don't touch anything. Leave it! I'm on my way.

EXT—WASHINGTON, DC, DAY

INT—PENTAGON STONE LAB

[Wray, in the body of Rooney looks over at Telford's body.]

WRAY/ROONEY
  Lieutenant Scott?

[He nods.]

WRAY/ROONEY
  It's me, Camile.

[Scott looks down at the monitor to see himself in Telford's body.]

SCOTT/TELFORD
  Weird.

INT—CHAIR ROOM

[Young and Rush have joined the others in the room.]

YOUNG
  Neural interface?

RUSH
A precursor to an Ancient device SG-1 discovered several years ago. A repository of knowledge that can be literally…downloaded into one's mind.

YOUNG
And you think this is one of those things?

RUSH
Within that knowledge may be the master code to unlock the ship's core systems. Navigation, propulsion.

YOUNG
  You're sure?

RUSH
Well, we can't be certain until someone actually sits in the chair.

GREER
It looks like it holds you down and shoots bolts into your head.

RUSH
The-these are merely electrodes allowing the transfer of data.

YOUNG
You know what a device like this did to General O'Neill?

[Rush takes a large breath.]

RUSH
The sheer amount of information overwhelmed him, yes.

YOUNG
It damn near killed him is what it did.

RUSH
  It led to incredible discoveries.

YOUNG

And…it damn near killed him. In fact, the only thing we know for sure is an Ancient device like this is pretty much a death sentence. Nobody sits in this thing.
  (to Greer)

I want a guard detail posted.

RUSH
So what are we to do, Colonel? Just ignore what this chair can do?

YOUNG
I'm not telling you to ignore it. I'm telling you to study it without sitting in it.

RUSH
But, Colonel, this predates those found in the Milky Way. I'd be willing to bet the effects are far less severe.

YOUNG
Would you bet your own life?

[Rush says nothing.]

YOUNG
So you're fine then, as long as someone else volunteers.

GREER
Hell, if it means getting these people home, I'll sit in the damn thing.

TJ

(over radio)

Colonel Young, come in.

YOUNG

(into radio)

Go ahead.

TJ

(over radio)

Colonel Telford's in the communications lab. He's switched bodies with Scott, and he wants to talk to you.

YOUNG

(over radio)

I'm on my way.

RUSH
Colonel, so far I've only managed to access portions of Destiny's database. We still can't actually control the ship.

YOUNG
Even if we could turn this thing around right now and head back to Earth, how long would that take? Another million years? Rush, you want this chair to be some kind of wonderful discovery, that's fine. Prove it. You prove you can use it safely, to do something we actually need it to do. Until then, no one goes near.

[After a moment, Rush nods.]

INT—STONE LAB

[Young enters to greet TJ and Telford, in Scott's body. Rooney, in Wray's body, stands at attention.]

YOUNG
Always you on the stones. Don't you let anyone else take a turn?

TELFORD/SCOTT
Why haven't you given us any of the data collected during our experiment?

YOUNG
Well we're still working on it ourselves.

TELFORD/SCOTT
I've got a team of the best scientists on Earth. We want to help.

YOUNG
'Till things got out of hand, then you jumped ship. Leave us on our own.

TELFORD/SCOTT
How did Rush do it? How did he "defuse" the situation?

YOUNG
Well, when I know, you'll know.

TELFORD/SCOTT
You know, Colonel, I don't get it. I would think you'd be doing everything possible to get these people home, to get yourself home. Back to your wife.

[Young smirks, not looking at Telford.]

YOUNG
If you need anything, you ask Lieutenant James.

[They stare each other down.]

EXT—PENTAGON, ARLINGTON VA, DAY

[Wray/Rooney and her escort, Peterson are heading to a car. Strom runs out of the building.]

STROM
Camile, it is you, right? I didn't know that you were checking in today.

WRAY/ROONEY
Oh, um, I'm not actually, this is a personal visit. Last time I was here, I didn't get the chance to go home.

STROM
  Right, of course, but…since I have you…

WRAY/ROONEY

(to Peterson)

Uh, I'll be there in a minute.

[Peterson leaves Wray/Rooney and Strom to talk.]

STROM
Colonel Telford's team is working on adjustments to their plan. They're making some progress.

WRAY/ROONEY
Young is not going to listen, at least not anytime soon. And Dr. Rush, well, like you said, he's in no hurry to come home.

STROM
Still trying to take command of the ship?

WRAY/ROONEY
He and Young are bumping heads, yes. Right now, Young seems to be winning that battle.

STROM
  And you?

WRAY/ROONEY
I'm caught between them. I'm not sure which camp is the better choice.

STROM
Maybe it's time you started your own.

INT—PENTAGON HALLWAY

[Mehta hands Scott some letters.]

MEHTA
Your mail. All four letters. Popular guy. So, I'm your chaperone. Where do you want to go? Any family? Friends?

SCOTT/TELFORD
There's a buddy I want to catch up with. He's at Edwards, or he…was…

[He reads his letter, and his jaw drops.]

MEHTA
  No problem.

[She notices Scott's become distracted by one of his letters.]

MEHTA
  You okay?

INT—LOUNGE

[TJ talks with Park.]

TJ
I would imagine the level of stress that comes along with trying to figure out the inner workings of this ship…

PARK
I know, it's intense, especially figuring that we've only just scratched the surface of all there is to know.

TJ
So, how are you dealing with it? I mean, what are you doing to…relieve the stress?

PARK

(awkwardly)

Oh, I…um…read.

INT—GATE ROOM

[Spencer leads several of the crew in calisthenics, counting off their pushups, jumping jacks and lunges.]

SPENCER
  35, 36, 37, 38, 39…1,2,3, eighteen, 1,2,3, nineteen.

[They do relays across the room.]

SPENCER
Move it move it! Faster come on, people! Faster! Faster, Franklin, move it! You're pathetic, Franklin. You know that? Go again! Again, Franklin! Move that fat ass. You're pathetic. Go again.

[A breathless Franklin vomits at Spencer's feet.]

EXT—URBAN STREET, DAY

[Scott/Telford and Mehta pull up outside a house.]

MEHTA
She's not cleared, so stick with the cover story.

[Scott nods, adjusting Telford's hat on his head, and heads to the door. He knocks, but there is no response. He looks in a nearby window to see if he can see any life and sees a little boy about eight years old looking back at him.]

SCOTT/TELFORD
Hey, there. I'm looking for Annie Balic? I'm an old friend of hers. Does she live here?

MATTHEW
  She's my mom.

[Scott is taken aback.]

EXT—SUBURBAN STREET, DAY

[Peterson walks out the front door, Sharon following and looking anxious. Wray jumps out of the car and runs to the door. She pauses cautiously in front of Sharon, who's staring warily at the body Wray's inhabiting, seeing a younger woman with brown hair and freckles.]

SHARON
  Is it really you?

WRAY/ROONEY

(in Chinese)

Have you thrown away that ugly chair yet?

[They embrace, both sobbing softly.]

EXT—SPACE

[Destiny flies faster than light.]

INT—DESTINY CONTROL ROOM

[Brody, Park, Volker, and Rush are working on the chair consoles.]

BRODY
If someone wants to volunteer to sit in it, why won't he let them?

PARK
  He's trying to protect us?

BRODY
  Oh, please.

VOLKER

It's politics. He resists at first, comes around eventually, gives it the green light, and if it works, he's the big hero. And if it doesn't, well…
  (turns to Rush)

you get to take the blame.

RUSH
  Yes.

INT—LOUNGE

[TJ speaks to Chloe.]

CHLOE
How am I coping? Honestly? I don't know. The people on board make it easier, that's for sure. I made some good friends. And…I met Matt. So, there's that to be grateful for.

TJ
So are things getting serious between you two?

CHLOE
He's been a real comfort. When we're together…it's not so lonely. You know?

[TJ swallows and awkwardly nods.]

INT—WRAY/SHARON MASTER SUITE

[Wray/Rooney enjoys a long shower in Wray's own tub. She changes into casual clothes and walks towards Sharon on the bed where they laugh and then kiss.]

INT—WRAY/SHARON KITCHEN

[Later, the two are cooking together over a wok.]

INT—WRAY/SHARON DINING ROOM

[Later, they talk over a long dinner, drinking wine and eating with chopsticks. Sharon is riveted by Wray's stories.]

EXT—URBAN STREET, NIGHT

[Scott/Telford and Mehta sit in a car outside Annie's house. Matthew keeps peaking out the window at them.]

MEHTA
Say the word, and I'll call child protective services.

SCOTT/TELFORD
He says she'll be home soon.

MEHTA
  Which was three hours ago.

SCOTT/TELFORD
I just want to make sure…

[He spots Annie walking down the dark street and gets out of the car to meet her.]

SCOTT/TELFORD
  Annie Balic?

[Annie takes in Telford's uniform.]

ANNIE
  Yeah?

SCOTT/TELFORD
  I'm uh, I'm Colonel Telford. I'm a friend of Matthew Scott's?

ANNIE
  Is he okay?

SCOTT/TELFORD
Yeah, he's fine. He's on a mission. It-it's classified. I can't say where, but…he got your letter. It said you needed to see him?

[She looks towards the house.]

INT—WRAY/SHARON HOME

[Sharon and Wray head into the living room, carrying their wine glasses.]

SHARON
  Have you seen your parents?

WRAY/ROONEY
No point. They're not cleared. I can't tell them who I really am.

SHARON
Well, you can tell them that their daughter's okay. You can tell them that she misses them, and she loves them. Go see them.

[Wray grunts noncommittally, then looks pointedly at a threadbare red upholstered chair in the living room and clears her throat.]

SHARON

(sheepish)

Oh, um, I tried to sell that.

WRAY/ROONEY
  Mmm?

SHARON
  I did!

WRAY/ROONEY

(skeptical)

Right.

SHARON
  I really…

[Sharon rolls her eyes and gives up.]

WRAY/ROONEY
  Mmm, yeah.

SHARON
  C'mere.

[Sharon drags her to the sofa.]

WRAY/ROONEY
It's so strange, you know, this other body. You know, food doesn't taste quite right. Wine, either.

[She leans back against Sharon, settling comfortably.]

WRAY/ROONEY
  Oh. Now this…this feels right.

[She looks around the room, seeing a painting of a beach scene hanging above the fireplace mantel. It is the same scene she was sketching when she was aboard Destiny.]

WRAY/ROONEY

(ruefully)

So much for retiring to our beach.

SHARON
Mm-mm-mm. None of that right now.

[Wray/Rooney continues to stare at the picture above the mantle. She frowns in thought as she sees the boat, prominent in the foreground of painting.]

WRAY/ROONEY
  Forgot the rowboat.

SHARON
  Hmm?

WRAY/ROONEY

(sitting up, staring)

Why did I forget the rowboat?

[Overwhelmed, she breaks down into tears. Sharon takes away the wine glass, reaches to embrace Wray/Rooney and rocks her comfortingly.]

SHARON
Come here. Come on…Come here. It's okay.

INT—DESTINY CORRIDOR

[TJ tries to catch up to Rush in the corridor.]

TJ
Hey, Dr. Rush, you got a sec?

RUSH
  No.

TJ
I'm doing psych evaluations. The entire crew.

RUSH
  No, thank you.

TJ
Col. Young ordered them. It's just a…just a talk, see how you're doing, give you a chance to voice any problems or frustrations…?

RUSH
Well, I'm fine. No problems, no complaints. Is that it?

[He shuts the door in her face without waiting for her response.]

TJ
  Yeah.

INT—ANNIE'S HOME

[Matthew stares up at the man he sees as Telford, staying quiet. Annie picks up things, including a box of Cap'n Crunch.]

ANNIE

He's not usually this shy. It must be the uniform. He loves the military.
  (to Matthew)

Did you eat?

[Matthew nods.]

ANNIE
Go brush your teeth. Matthew. Go.

[Scott looks stunned at hearing the boy's name.]

SCOTT/TELFORD
  I-is…is Lieutenant Scott…?

ANNIE
I don't know how good of a friend you are, or what he might have told you about us?

SCOTT/TELFORD
Uh, he said there was a pregnancy, but that you were going to…

ANNIE
  I couldn't. I couldn't go through with it.

SCOTT/TELFORD

(sharply, furious)

Why didn't you tell him?

[Even though Scott remembers himself at time, Annie has taken umbrage at his tone.]

ANNIE

(defensive)

I didn't want to burden him. He was dealing with a lot of stuff at the time.

[Scott/Telford tries to gather himself from the shock. Annie pours herself a glass of white wine.]

INT—CONTROL ROOM

[Rush looks around to see Park, Volker, and Brody all studying their own screens. He presses a button on his console and gasps at what appears on the monitor.]

RUSH
  Whoa.

PARK
  What is it?

[Rush chuckles triumphantly. The others come over and stare at the screen.]

RUSH
  Now, that's good.

INT—LOUNGE

[Greer sits with TJ.]

GREER

Look, there's a bad guy out there, put a gun in my hand, I'll go kill him. Not going to lose any sleep over it. Your ass needs saving, I'm going to save it or I'm going to die trying. I didn't ask to be like this. Nobody made me this way. You want to riff about my…my childhood? How my daddy…beat my ass? Really, really messed me up?
  (He laughs)

What, you think you can understand me?

TJ
No, I just want to talk.

GREER
I wish people would just shut up. Be happy for what I am.

TJ
  People?

GREER
People less willing or able to do…what I do.

TJ
He fought in Desert Storm, didn't he? Your dad?

GREER
  I'm not talking about him.

TJ
You're the one who brought him up. What was he like?

[Greer stands and walks out.]

INT—ANNIE'S HOME

[Scott watches Annie pour herself more wine.]

ANNIE
My mom used to babysit him after school. This is her house. She died last summer. This new job, though. Insane hours, but the money is really good, so I should be able to hire a sitter real soon.

SCOTT/TELFORD
  Oh, what's the job?

ANNIE
  I dance.

SCOTT/TELFORD

(struggling to remain calm)

Matt said something about you going to college, about becoming a lawyer?

ANNIE

(ruefully)

Yeah. That was then, right?

[She drinks more wine. There is a knock at the door. Annie goes to answer it. She returns with Mehta.]

MEHTA
  It's time.

[Scott/Telford sits at the table several moments, thinking.]

SCOTT/TELFORD
I-I need to use your cell phone, real quick.

[Mehta frowns, but hands over her phone.]

SCOTT/TELFORD
  Thanks. I'll be right back.

[He walks out of hearing distance.]

INT—WRAY/SHARON'S HOME

[Wray/Rooney opens the door to find Peterson standing outside, looking uncomfortable. She's already changed into Rooney's uniform.]

PETERSON
  Sorry.

WRAY/ROONEY
  Be right there.

[She closes the door, leaving him outside as she stands with Sharon in the foyer. She struggles not to cry again. Sharon hugs her.]

SHARON
Come here. You are going to take a deep breath, and you're going to find the strength. Okay? You're going to go back to that ship, and you are going to work with those people. Motivate them, do whatever you need to do to get yourself back home. 'Cause I'm going to be here. I'm not going anywhere.

WRAY/ROONEY
  Promise?

SHARON
I already did that, twelve years ago. The only thing that won't be here when you get back will be that stupid chair over there.

[They kiss passionately.]

SHARON
  Wo ai ni.

WRAY/ROONEY
  I love you, too.

[She opens the door.]

SHARON
  Be right here.

WRAY/ROONEY
  Mm-hmm.

[With Wray gone, Sharon sighs, letting go of the strong calm she's been fronting for Wray's benefit; she begins to weep herself.]

INT—ANNIE'S HOUSE

[Scott/Telford walks back with Mehta's phone. Annie is still drinking heavily.]

SCOTT/TELFORD
Okay, okay, so they-they just patched-patched me through to Matt, and um, and I told him.

ANNY
  He was angry, wasn't he?

SCOTT/TELFORD
He's going to need some time. It's a lot to take in right now. But anyway, long story short. The mission that he's on right now takes care of him financially. So he's going to arrange to have his monthly Air Force check directly deposited into your bank account.

ANNIE

(smiling)

Really?

SCOTT/TELFORD

(smiling)

Yeah, that way you-you can quit your job, you can go back to school, you know, and follow through with your dreams…

ANNIE
Wait a minute. If Matt wants to help us out, that's great. But, uh, I'm okay with my job.

SCOTT/TELFORD
  W-wait. Wait. What about college?

ANNIE
Me, a lawyer? Yeah, like that was ever gonna happen.

SCOTT/TELFORD

(angry)

Did you even try?!

ANNIE
Tell Matt thanks, but I've got things under control here. He doesn't have to worry about us.

EXT—SUBURBAN STREET, NIGHT

[Wray/Rooney stands on a porch in front of an older couple, her parents. Mr. Wray stiffly nods and steps back inside the house. Wray/Rooney turns on her heel and heads down the walk. Mrs. Wray watches her go with a strange look on her face, then follows her husband inside. Wray/Rooney gets in the car.]

WRAY/ROONEY

(bitter, to Peterson)

I told you it wouldn't take long.

INT—CONTROL ROOM

[Eli, Franklin, and Young have joined the others in the control room.]

RUSH
I've been able to access a subspace link between Destiny and the unmanned ships that were sent out ahead of it.

YOUNG
The ones seeding the Stargates on the planets?

RUSH
Yeah. We now have data on literally thousands of 'gates that have already been seeded. I've only managed to get through a fraction of it, but…I found something quite interesting.

ELI
Whoa…almost the same mineral composition as the Icarus planet.

YOUNG
  How long?

RUSH
One year away. Naturally occurring naquadria throughout the planet's crust. Ample power for our needs.

FRANKLIN
One more year, and we can gate back home?

RUSH
Well, it's not quite as simple as that.

ELI
We have to learn how to steer the ship.

RUSH
  How to orbit the planet.

ELI
Not to mention how to make the 'gate work to dial home from there.

RUSH
Yes, as I said, much to be done, but we will of course need, the, uh, master code.

YOUNG
Well, then you better get to work cracking it. Sounds like you got the better part of a year.

RUSH
  But the, uh…neural interface device.

YOUNG
Is still off limits. God, you think I don't know what you're doing here? Crack the damn code, Rush. That's your job.

INT—CORRIDOR

[Young walks past the lab holding the communication stones just as Wray is leaving.]

YOUNG
  Hey, how'd it go?

WRAY

(sarcastic)

Great.

[She walks past him. Nonplussed, Young pauses to wait for Scott, who still looks shaken.]

YOUNG
  And you?

SCOTT

(despondent)

Great.

[He too walks away without saying more.]

YOUNG
  Hmm.

INT—MESS HALL

[Several people are gathered as Rush explains the situation, while using straightened wires to cobble together new glasses.]

RIVERS
One year, and we're out of here?

RUSH
Well, first we have to do what's necessary.

GREER
  Then get to it.

RUSH
I will. But we'll need your, uh…support, shall we say?

GREER
Huh. Look, if it means getting off of this tin can, then we're all in.

SPENCER
I can't wait another year. I want off this ship now.

GREER
Chill out, Spencer. A year's a helluva lot better than forever.

[Spencer storms out. Rush tests out his new glasses. Cobbled from different parts, they sit on his face evenly.]

RUSH
  Wow…that is much better.

INT—LOUNGE

[TJ speaks with Volker.]

VOLKER

(excited)

We'll crack it. I know we will. If we can, I know that Col. Young will give us access to the chair. He has to. A chance like this? This is our ticket home.

TJ

(smiling)

Er, uh, the word's getting around. I mean, everyone's really excited.

VOLKER
Hell, yes. It's good timing too, because I don't know about you, but I was getting to the end of my rope, here.

[TJ looks at him, disturbed by the comment.]

INT—SCOTT'S QUARTERS

[Scott lies in his bed, restless. He sees mental images of Emily, Young's wife, smiling at him and laughing while drinking wine.]

INT—YOUNG'S OFFICE

[Scott is in Young's office.]

SCOTT
It's weird. I've never even met your wife. I only saw that one picture you had in your office at Icarus.

YOUNG
  Telford. You connected with him.

SCOTT
Well, so what? This is a residual memory of his that somehow transferred to my subconscious?

[Young starts spinning his wedding band around his finger.]

SCOTT
Doesn't mean it was an actual memory. It could've been one of…his dreams. I mean, just because I saw her doesn't mean the two of th…

[Scott decides to stop talking.]

YOUNG
  No. Thanks.

INT—CORRIDOR

[TJ runs into Wray in the hall.]

TJ
  Camile!

WRAY
  TJ.

TJ
  Hi.

WRAY
Dr. Boone told me about a planet Rush discovered in the database. Is it true?

TJ
  Yeah, finally some good news.

WRAY

(sighing in relief)

Ah, I hope it pans out the way he says it will.

TJ
Yeah, so listen, uh, while you were gone, Col. Young asked me to do psych evaluations on the entire crew, assess people's state of mind, any red flags that we might need to be aware of.

WRAY

(encouraging)

Yeah, that's a good idea.

TJ

(nervously)

Yeah. So, um, I was just kinda wondering if you had some time to maybe sit down and talk to me?

[Wray is starting to move away.]

WRAY
Oh, uh, right. Um, no problem, but, you know, I have some things I need to do today. Is tomorrow okay?

TJ

(weakly)

Yeah, okay, tomorrow's good.

INT—CORRIDOR

[Franklin is walking down a corridor, reading a report. He bumps into Spencer headed the other direction, just brushing shoulders against each other.]

FRANKLIN
  Sorry.

[Spencer shoves Franklin.]

SPENCER
  Watch where you're going.

FRANKLIN
  Easy! I said sorry.

[Spencer shoves Franklin again.]

SPENCER
Expect people to just get out of your way!

FRANKLIN
  What the hell's your problem?

[Spencer keeps after Franklin.]

SPENCER
My problem is fat asses like you clogging up the hallways!

YOUNG
  Hey!

[Young pulls Spencer off Franklin and throws him against the bulkhead, staying close while gripping Spencer's shirt.]

YOUNG
  I've had it with you!

SPENCER
What the hell did I do?

[Young pushes him back again.]

YOUNG
Listen to me, I don't know what the hell your problem is, but you better get it together fast.

SPENCER
  He ran into me!

[Young slams him against the bulkhead again.]

YOUNG

(furious)

Shut up! I don't care who ran into who! You keep pulling this crap, I'm gonna lock you up for good. You got that?!

[He lets Spencer go, shoving him down the hall.]

YOUNG

(still angry)

Get out of here. Take a walk!

[Spencer storms off. Young turns back to Franklin and then leaves the shaken man.]

EXT—OBSERVATION DECK

[Chloe and Scott sit on the bench, watching the aurora effect of faster than light speed.]

CHLOE

(nonplussed)

A son! Wow. Heh. That is…um…that's wild.

SCOTT
  Yeah, tell me about it.

CHLOE
  What's his name?

SCOTT
Matthew. I got an eight-year-old kid named after me. How weird is that?

[Chloe touches his knee.]

CHLOE
  Are you okay?

SCOTT
Yeah. It-it's a lot to…deal with. Angry…that she didn't tell me. That I couldn't be there for him.

CHLOE

Look, one more year, and then you can take him to soccer games and little league…
(trying not to be too curious)

What's the mother like?

SCOTT
  She's got her issues.

CHLOE
  You two were…close?

SCOTT
Not really. Well, um, yeah, I mean, for a short time. But things…happened. We-we lost touch.

CHLOE

(ruefully)

Until now.

INT—CONTROL ROOM

[Eli stares at the data about this newly found planet. He looks closer, and types some commands. A red screen pops up, and Eli looks very concerned.]

EXT—STREET OUTSIDE YOUNG HOME, DAY

[Telford gets out of his car and heads to Emily's house. Peterson watches uncomfortably as Young/Roberts watches from the passenger seat. He gets out of the car and follows Telford, staying out of sight. He spots Telford and Emily happily chatting in the house through the window. He opens the unlocked door and storms in.]

INT—YOUNG LIVING ROOM

[Telford sees who he thinks is Roberts storming in.]

TELFORD
What the hell are you doing here?

YOUNG/ROBERTS
You stay away from my wife you pathetic piece of scum.

EMILY
  Who is this?

TELFORD
Keep your finger out of my face.

EMILY

(confused)

Everett?

YOUNG/ROBERTS
This is how you get back at me? Pretend to be me? Crawl in bed with my wife?

EMILY
No, he didn't pretend to be you. He never pretended to be you.

[Telford has moved to the other side of the room and makes a call on his cell phone, using speed dial.]

EMILY
He told me who he was all along. And I didn't sleep with him by the way. But thanks for not jumping to conclusions. He's a friend. He's helping support me through this.

YOUNG/ROBERTS

(sarcastic)

What? Really? Is that right?

EMILY
Not all men are like you. And I know you're still sleeping with her.

YOUNG/ROBERTS
  Did he tell you this?

[He and Emily stare each other down.]

EMILY
  Everett!

[Emily tries futilely to pull Young back as he goes to attack Telford. Telford faces him stonily, still holding the phone.]

INT—DESTINY STONE LAB

[Young sits up from where his body has been lounging on a bench.]

YOUNG
  What happened? What just happened?

[Boone fusses with the controls, switching the device on and off.]

BOONE
Um…the-uh connection must have been severed, Colonel. I-I don't know why…

YOUNG
  Are you kidding me?

[Young storms out of the chamber.]

INT—CORRIDOR

[An upset Eli and Scott see him pass the kino room, next door to the stone room. Young doesn't stop his pace, so they have to keep trailing behind him.]

SCOTT
  Colonel Young?

YOUNG
  Not now.

SCOTT
Eli was just checking the planetary database.

ELI
The subspace link from the ships that are seeding the 'gates. I came across something that didn't quite fit with the coordinates that were established on the previous—

YOUNG
  Can't this wait?

ELI

(continuing)

…on a previous pass.

SCOTT

(speaking over him)

No, sir, it can't.

ELI
  Rush lied!

[Young stops and turns around.]

ELI
The Icarus planet that he discovered a year away? It doesn't exist. It's fake data. He planted it himself.

[Wray has entered the corridor just in time to hear Eli's news and is shocked. Young spots her on the far end, and his shoulders slump.]

EXT—SPACE

[Destiny flies faster than light.]

INT—CONTROL ROOM

YOUNG
  You lied to these people.

RUSH
  I gave them hope.

YOUNG
  False hope, Rush.

RUSH
Yeah, well so was dialing Earth. I knew it was pointless at the time, but you persisted. Why? To boost morale. You tell me the difference.

YOUNG
I'll tell you one difference. One's a lie.

RUSH
Who cares? Who else knows about this, then?

YOUNG
Wray overheard, so we can assume everyone knows on the ship.

RUSH
Ah, well, well done, Colonel. You just ruined the chance to maximize productivity.

YOUNG
I wasn't the one who planted false information.

RUSH
Well, there may very well be an Icarus-type planet buried in the data. There may very well be. I've only begun to scratch the surface, but I'd be a lot further on, if you would just let me use that…

YOUNG
  Again with the chair!

RUSH
Yes, the chair! It could be our salva—

YOUNG

(shouting)

And it could KILL SOMEBODY!

RUSH
A sacrifice that-that could save the lives of everyone else on this ship!

[Young opens the hatch to the section, then turns back around. They stand nose to nose.]

YOUNG
I'm not stopping you, Rush. Go. Sit. Be my guest.

[Rush backs down.]

YOUNG
  That's what I thought.

INT—SHUTTLE

[Eli walks along the corridor by the shuttle. He spots Scott inside and enters.]

ELI
  Hey…

SCOTT

(not happy to be interrupted)

Hey.

ELI
You hiding out, too? TJ's doing her psych evals. I've been trying to avoid her.

SCOTT
  Why?

ELI
Well, you, you start opening up….You end up saying all sorts of personal stuff you probably shouldn't. Then you have to live with these people? See 'em every day. Have her give you weird looks as she passes you in the hall. Gets awkward.

[He sits comfortably. Scott sighs, resigned to his lack of solitude.]

ELI
Chloe tells me you're a dad. Congrats! Got yourself a mini-Matt.

[Eli chuckles. Scott bends forward, not looking at Eli and not smiling.]

ELI

(realizing his faux pas)

See, that's what I'm talking about. I speak, I say something I shouldn't, and…I talk before I think.

SCOTT
  It's okay.

ELI
No, no! Look at you. You're…you're bummed. You just found out you have a son, but now he's probably not ever going to get the chance to actually meet you. And that…sucks. You don't want to talk about that.

[Scott looks at him, his eyes brimming with tears.]

ELI

(embarrassed)

I'm going to go now.

[Scott nods with a thin smile. Eli leaves.]

INT—SHOWER ROOM

[Wray leans against the shower, sobbing quietly, seeming to think through things. She dries her tears and looks resolved.]

INT—MESS HALL

[TJ enters. The room is empty except for Young, nursing a drink.]

TJ

I've completed fourteen psych evals, I have eight more scheduled, and I think the rest of the ship's avoiding me.
  (she notices he's distracted)

What's wrong?

YOUNG
  Bad day.

TJ
A lot of those lately, huh? Hey, something else is bothering you. What happened?

YOUNG
  This my psych eval?

TJ
  It can be.

[After several silent seconds.]

TJ
  Come on, talk to me.

[He studies her for several moments.]

YOUNG
  Bad day.

[He leaves.]

EXT—WASHINGTON, DC, DAY

INT—PENTAGON STONE LAB

[Peterson stands before an Airman named Lucas sitting by the chair.]

PETERSON
  Dr. Volker?

YOUNG/LUCAS
  Yes.

PETERSON
Welcome to Earth, I'm Major Peterson. I've got a car waiting for you, anywhere you want to go.

[He nods and follows.]

EXT—SUBURBAN STREET, DAY

[Telford heads to his car. Young/Lucas attacks him from behind, beating him to the ground. Telford is rolling around on the ground, only half-aware.]

EXT—OBSERVATION DECK

[Chloe and Eli do yoga together.]

INT—WRAY'S QUARTERS

[Wray sketches the painting from her fireplace, adding the rowboat.]

INT—PARK'S QUARTERS

[Park has sex with Greer.]

INT—KINO ROOM

[Young stares at kino footage of the control room. Rush is working. Brody glares at the kino, and at Rush.]

INT—HYDROPONICS LAB

[Franklin smiles at a tiny shoot sprouting from one of the hydroponics pots.]

INT—SPENCER'S QUARTERS

[Spencer lies on his bed, staring upward.]

INT—SHUTTLE

[Scott stares out the window of the shuttle, tears in his eyes.]

FADE OUT
