The Wraith creation facility is a secret Ancient prison and research facility on the frozen planet where the Wraith were created.
History
Around nine hundred years before Atlantis was abandoned, in an effort to make themselves immortal in case they couldn't Ascend, the Ancients began experimenting on transforming themselves into immortal beings. On a frozen planet, the Ancients built a facility where they experimented on one hundred male and one hundred female test subjects taken from around the galaxy while creating a weapon that would wipe out their test subjects if they ever lost control of them. All but nine of the females died in the experiment while ninety-nine of the males survived. Under the Ancients testing, the Wraith began developing the characteristics and powers they would later have. Eventually, the Wraith learned how to use their telepathic abilities and tricked the guards into releasing them. The Wraith stole the weapon that could kill them and the facility's ZPM and escaped through the Stargate to Athos. The Ancients chased them, but by the time they reached Athos, the Wraith were gone. The facility was subsequently shut down by the Ancients, stripped of anything useful, and abandoned. The Ancients held a disiplinary hearing on the matter, investigating the decisions of the prison administrator who was killed in the escape. (SGA: "The Furies", "Secrets")
The facility remained abandoned for 10,000 years until the frozen planet became the new home of Atlantis. The Atlantis expedition located and investigated the facility. An avalanche blocked the hanger entrance that they had used, trapping the team and injuring Dr. Eva Robinson. When the team was overdue, Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard took another Puddle Jumper to investigate and made contact via the communications systems of a wrecked Jumper in the hanger, learning of their predicament. At Sheppard's request, the George Hammond beamed the team out. Given the current state of affairs, Sheppard and Colonel Samantha Carter put off further exploration for the time being as it would take a lot of time and effort to clear the entrance, although they agreed to set Dr. Miko Kusanagi's team to the task once there was time. Dr. Radek Zelenka suggested sending Kusanagi -- who was a natural carrier of the ATA gene -- the Marine combat engineers, and possibly Captain Laura Cadman when the time was right. Investigating further in the Atlantis database, Doctor William Lynn found records of a prison break where the prisoners escaped to Athos as the planet once had a Stargate, but it was long gone. However, he couldn't find more than that. He also found no records of the planet of any kind in the database including a Stargate address or even a survey despite the secret prison facility. Sheppard, Zelenka, Lynn and Ronon returned to the facility via Asgard beaming, but the remaining power in the backup batteries had been depleted during the previous visit and the ZPM was gone. However, the four found bullet holes in the floor that had been repaired. With nothing left to do, the Hammond beamed them out.
The expedition later learned the truth about the facility and its purpose when Teyla Emmagan accessed the Wraith's genetic memory. They were able to use the genetic memories to locate the facility's ZPM and Hyperion's weapon on Car Leonid. The ZPM was discovered to be 97 percent charged. (SGA: "Secrets")
