"It jams the frequencies the Goa'uld use for communication and the remote control devices like the ring transporters. Right now, we're working on making it portable enough to..."
Major Samantha Carter[src]

The jamming device is a device developed by Major Samantha Carter to block Asgard beaming technology.

Overview

The device emits an EM field that prevents Asgard beaming technology from working. In areas covered by the jamming devices, beaming in and out is impossible. (SG1: "Chimera")

The signal from a combination of a large number of subcutaneous locator beacons in close proximity can penetrate the jamming field and allow beaming. Dr. Daniel Jackson, while possessing both the powers of a Prior and the knowledge of the Ancient Merlin, is somehow able to penetrate the technology as well despite the flaw supposedly having been fixed following Ba'al's takeover of Stargate Command. (SG1: "Insiders", "The Shroud")

History

Tau'ri

In 2003, Major Samantha Carter has created a prototype of the jamming device, an important innovation because of the use of Asgard technology by the Goa'uld System Lord Anubis. Shortly afterwards, it's discovered that Osiris is invading Dr. Daniel Jackson's dreams in the hopes of using him to find the Lost City of the Ancients. In order to capture her, SG-1 installs a jamming device in their surveillance van outside of Daniel Jackson's house and activates it once Osiris beams in. After Daniel discovers that he doesn't know the Stargate address of the Lost City, Osiris tries to beam out, but is successfully prevented by the jamming device. In the skirmish that follows, Osiris destroys the van and the jamming device using a Za'tarc ring, but is tranquilized and captured by Colonel Jack O'Neill before he can escape. (SG1: "Chimera")

After the Alpha Gate is stolen by the Trust in 2004, the SGC installs jamming devices around the recovered Stargate to prevent this from ever happening again. This eventually turns into the entire SGC being covered by jamming devices to prevent anyone from beaming in or out. (SG1: "Endgame", "Insiders")

In 2006, Ba'al crashes an Al'kesh near the SGC. After it's discovered that Ba'al is implanted with a locator beacon, it's initially suspected that Ba'al intends to be beamed out, but the jamming devices will prevent it. At the end of Ba'al's takeover of Stargate Command, all of the Ba'al clones gather in an isolation room, and they are beamed out to a Tel'tak in orbit. In the aftermath, it's discovered that the combined signal from all of the clones' locator beacons at close range was enough to punch through the jamming field and allow them to beam out. NID Agent Malcolm Barrett had been brainwashed by the Trust on Ba'al's behalf and provided them with the designs of the jamming device, allowing Ba'al to find a weakness in it. (SG1: "Insiders")

After gaining the powers of a Prior, Daniel is somehow able to penetrate the jamming field to beam Richard Woolsey and the Odyssey crew to the SGC and O'Neill to the ship. This causes O'Neill to complain to Major General Hank Landry that he thought that they had fixed it so that couldn't happen anymore. (SG1: "The Shroud")

After overcoming the Prior disruptor, Adria is able to generate an EM field similar to the one from the jamming device to keep the Odyssey from beaming SG-1 into the infirmary to stop her. (SG1: "Dominion")

At least some Tau'ri offworld bases also possess jamming devices as a form of shielding. During the Battle of Icarus Base, the George Hammond is unable to beam anyone inside of Icarus Base out as a result. Instead, most of the personnel escape through the Stargate to Destiny. (SGU: "Air, Part 1")

Lucian Alliance

Possibly through the information stolen by their brainwashed mole Colonel David Telford, the Lucian Alliance has developed their own version of this technology. Kiva's forces deploy it while meeting with Dr. Nicholas Rush in Telford's body, preventing the George Hammond from locking on to Rush or anyone else in the area. As a result, before ground forces can move in, the Lucian Alliance escapes with Rush in a Tel'tak. (SGU: "Subversion")

The Lucian Alliance also deploys it at the Lucian Alliance outpost on the Icarus-like planet. This keeps the Hammond from beaming Rush out or troops in. (SGU: "Incursion, Part 1")
